A harmless side comment from one musician to another ended up in a serious discussion about producing a three piece singing group, backed by a full jazz orchestra and band, celebrating their love of jazz, swing and blues, but adding a modern day twist to the genre. Swing City consists of Lonehill Estate’s Nathan Ro, whose love for swing music has always engrossed the pop/ rock singer’s iPod; Graeme Watkins, whose background in music and theatre started as a swing singer long before his success on Idols or in his indie rock band “The Graeme Watkins Project”; and Loyiso Bala, whose classically trained background in music saw the singer as part of the TZKee crew, the Bala brothers in classical song and in the pop world in his own successful career. The three singers, already friends, jokingly commented what fun it would be to start a swing band. ALT EGO’s self titled debut album was released in Jine 2017 and topped the iTunes SA Dance Album Chart on the day of it’s release. The debut single, Get Wild, has been playlisted on numerous radio stations country wide, and peaked at number 2 on the Goodhope FM Hot 30. A remix of the track, re-imagined by Zambian producer, El Mukuka, was released in Romania in October 2017. The second single, Embrasse Moi, was shot in collaboration with Sunglass Hut and is scheduled for a November release. Notable national performances include the EDM Night Nation Run Festival, and the NYE 2017 ampitherte party thrown by the V&A Waterfront. They have alson performed abroad at the prestigous Cafe Opera in Stockholm, Sweden. Having made our mark on the national scene and abroad during our debut year, ALT EGO has so much potential to explore in the short and long term future. With a background that was rooted in church music, Ms Maxolo felt the need to take her musicianship to a higher level by studying music formally. She went on to graduate Cum Laude in her Honours Degree in Jazz Music from the University of Cape Town. Lindiwe Maxolo has, for some years now, been working very hard towards establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with in the music industry.
