< Back Schalk Bezuidenhout Gauteng Schalk Bezuidenhout was born in a very Afrikaans, ‘bring-terug-Apartheid’ town right next to the airport in Joburg. In Kempton Park the traditional Afrikaans way of living was a good life. Your mother’s breast milk would be brannewyn en coke, you would walk kaalvoet to school, and you’d hide your lunch money when a black man walked past. His family and friends stood back as they watched Schalk evolve from an Afrikaans conservative caterpillar into a beautiful dramaqueen butterfly, complete with a moustache and furry afro. It was obvious to Schalk’s parents that he would study drama, and to help numb the pain they sent him away to study at the University of Cape Town. While studying in Cape Town Schalk slowly began to realise that there was so much more to life than boerewors and rugby, and started doing stand-up in April 2011. On stage Schalk is fun and energetic and appeals to people of all kinds and colours. Schalk has come a far way in the short amount of time that he has been doing comedy. He has had the privelage to perform at some great venues, alongside some even greater comedians. We will get back to you shortly event details Kwazulu Natal Qadasi and Maqhinga are an acoustic duo from Empangeni, in the heart of Zululand, on a mission to recover the strong sounds of traditional Maskandi music. Both talented musicians in their own right with similar visions, their collaboration has resulted in international calibre music that captures the heart and soul of South African roots music. David Jenkins, better known as Qadasi, is a talented Maskandi guitarist, concertina player, banjo player, and vocalist who discovered his love of Zulu culture and music while travelling across Zululand with his late father, a journalist. This fascination increased dramatically over time, and his love for traditional music was born as a result. After graduating in 2010, Qadasi published his first studio album on the Sande Entertainment label, which is led by Sibongiseni Shabalala of the five-time Grammy Award-winning group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. His second album, released in 2014, received SAMA (South African Music Award) and SATMA (South African Traditional Music Award) nominations. Qadasi was presented with a KwaZulu Natal Young Achievers Award in 2015 for promoting social cooperation via Maskandi music. ’Maqhinga Radebe's career began in the mid-1990s when he was given the opportunity to tour the United States with Ladysmith Black Mambazo as part of the stage drama Nomathemba. Maqhinga founded Shabalala Rhythm with Sibongiseni and Thamsanqa Shabalala upon his return to South Africa. Maqhinga's ability was thrust to the forefront as a result of the group's subsequent recognition, making him a prominent and highly respected artist in the Maskandi industry. Maqhinga has five solo albums to his reputation and has garnered various prizes for his incredible musical abilities, including SAMA and SATMA Award nominations. He has played in front of crowds all over the world and has shared stages with a number of critically acclaimed performers, including Hugh Masekela, Oliver Mtukudzi, and Soul Brothers, to mention a few. David met Maqhinga in Durban in 2010 while looking for a concertina tuner. After a "jam session," their tale began, and the two have become solid friends, with Maqhinga serving as music director and producer on David's first solo efforts. After seeing the creative possibilities of uniting their creativity, the outstanding musicians decided to join forces. Over the past few years, the two have travelled both at home and internationally with their diverse blend, performing for audiences in the United Kingdom, Europe, Asia, and South Africa. Lashis' Ilanga, their debut joint album, was published in 2016 and was nominated for a 2017 SAMA Award for Best Traditional Album. After reuniting with their entire band, Qadasi and Maqhinga released their long-awaited sophomore album, Ungabanaki, in December 2019. The album retains the spirit of Maskandi music while exploring the crossover of traditional and western forms. Aside from promoting Zulu culture, traditional music, and social harmony, the duo has been actively committed in rhino conservation, serving as rhino ambassadors for the Kingsley Holgate Foundation and Project Rhino KZN. The prospect of what lies ahead for this Maskandi combo, who is following in the footsteps of this formidable genre's giants, is really exciting.

< Back Mel Miller Gauteng Another true veteran of comedy Mel’s history as an entertainer goes way back to the early sixties when, as a member of well known folk singing group Mel, Mel and Julian the entertainment ‘bug’ bit, cementing Mel’s entire future as a sought after entertainer! In 1970 Mel returned to South Africa (after having spent a few years in Israel), once again entering the folk scene, albeit bringing with him a brand new dimension – comedy!!! Stints on television shows in the vein of Biltong & Potroast soon followed, as did a good 10 years working the Southern Sun circuit and the rest, as they say, became history! A true legend of South African comedy, Mel started mixing comedy and folk music in 1964. We will get back to you shortly Event details Gauteng An award-winning poet, author, presenter, actress, and producer, Lebo Mashile is a South African household name who is most recognizable for her lyrical and gutsy poetry which has captivated audiences in 28 countries over the last two decades. Venus vs Modernity: The Life of Saartjie Baartman marks Mashile’s first foray into penning a full-length theatrical production the play has been performed to sell-out audiences in Johannesburg and in Amsterdam. Mashile has previously acted in the Academy-award nominated film Hotel Rwanda, the stage adaptation of K. Sello Duiker’s The Quiet Violence of Dreams, as well as Ngyidansa, the stage adaptation of Pamela Nomvete’s autobiography by the same name. She also collaborated with renowned choreographer and founder of Moving into Dance Mophathong, Sylvia Glasser, on Threads, a fusion of contemporary dance and poetry. Mashile won the NOMA Award for Publishing in Africa in 2006 for her premier collection In A Ribbon of Rhythm (Oshun) which was also published in German by Wunderhorn. In 2008 she released Flying Above the Sky, her second book of poetry. Her writing has been referenced in academic journals, has appeared in literary journals as well as mainstream publications, and is taught in high schools and tertiary institutions across South Africa. As a recording artist, Mashile has two studio albums under her belt, Lebo Mashile Live! (2006) and Moya (2017). The poet shot to national fame as the presenter and producer of travel documentary series L’atitude (SABC1). She also presented Drawing The Line (SABC2) and Great Expectations (Etv). For the past three years, she has been the voice of CNN’s Inside Africa.
