CHICAGO The Musical – Murder, Sequins, Muscles and All that Jazz!
When it comes to world class musical theatre productions South Africans are spoilt for choice. CHICAGO the musical is currently back in Johannesburg for it’s third time! This comes hot on the heels of the proudly South African’s cast’s tour of the Far East and Cape Town.
Starring theatre stalwarts Craig Urbani (Buddy Holly, Thoroughly Modern Millie), Samantha Peo, (Cabaret, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Aspects of Love), Ilse Klink (Big Band Blast, The Full Monty, Chicago) and Carmen Pretorius (Mamma Mia, Sound Of Music) this production is not to be missed!
The two merry murderesses Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart are both played superbly with vocal gusto and perfectly timed comic nuances by Samantha Peo and Carmen Pretorius. It’s a real celebration of the femme fatale by these two exceptional performers.
One of my favourites and not to be looked over was the wonderfully endearing and vocally exceptional Grant Towers as the quick to miss, unmistakable Mr Cellophane himself Amos Hart.
The vocals in the show are impeccable, but the real star of the show is the mesmerising, sensual, seduction you feel the moment the beautiful bevvy of glistening, muscled clad chorus take to the stage. These incredible dancers would have creator Bob Fosse grinning with absolute bliss at the sheer perfection as they execute his choreography with the utmost care and delight that these masters of their craft can deliver.
Winner of six Tonys, two Oliviers, one Grammy, two BAFTAs and six Academy Awards, CHICAGO is the longest-running musical reviv-al in Broadway history and truly is “The sharpest, slickest show on the block” (The Times, UK).
