Abavuki

ARTIST ENQUIRY

Western Cape

Abavuki is a Langa, Cape Town-based Afro-Fusion World Music Ensemble that has been performing contagious cheerful beats across South Africa and internationally since 2001.

These gifted multi-instrumentalists combine traditional African instruments (drums, percussion, and marimbas) with brass (trumpet and trombone) to create their distinct, vibrant, and contemporary Mzansi sound, which is firmly based on African music principles and influenced by kwaito, jazz, and Latin American rhythms.

'Wake up, early birds!' is how the Xhosa moniker "Abavuki" means. This mentality is obvious in Abavuki's high-energy, upbeat music, which represents the band's positive outlook on life and approach to music-making.

Abavuki have released various albums, performed at top local & international festivals including being selected for Womex 2014, toured Europe (Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Poland, and more) & China, and a career highlight was being commissioned to record "Africa Got Soul" to celebrate Motown's 50th anniversary.

Interaction:

Abavuki can give interactive drumming (along with additional drums for the crowd). They also do the Abavuki shuffle, a crowd-pleasing dance that they have performed all over the world and in South Africa.

Configurations:

Abavuki is a 6- to 8-piece band, however smaller lineups are available upon request. The band also collaborates with local African dancers, both traditional and street dancers, and can provide a music and dance display for any occasion.
