2018 – A Theatrical feast of splendour

Hopefully by now you’ve all dusted off all the festive glitter and cheer and have your heads  buried down ready to tackle a new year with many exciting, fun and creative ventures ahead of you. But let’s not let go of your ability to have fun too quickly… after all a good balance of hard work and play is the key to a stress free, happy, productive soul!
2018 promises to be an exciting one for theatre and events and with entertainment being our forte we always strive to keep up with the latest in entertainment trends. Theatre is our passion and it is exciting to see so many wonderful, new productions coming to our South African stages this year that you simply cannot miss!
If it’s sheer spectacle you’re after that the whole family will enjoy then The Illusionists at the Teatro at Montecasino in February, it will be pure magic at its finest direct from Broadway and something to really feast your eyes on! The Teatro also sees the return of the much loved musical classic The Sound Of Music featuring Carmen Pretorius as Maria and Andre Schwartz as Captain Von Trapp and then ends off the year off with funny man Jimmy Carr Live direct from sell out shows in the UK and across the globe with his often dry and witty form of comic genius.
Everyone’s favourite ‘cousin’ and comedian Barry Hilton brings his show Grey Matters to the Lyric Theatre at Gold Reef City from 23rd February whilst Andre the Hilarious Hypnotist will be back with his wacky antics at the Pieter Toerien Theatre at Montecasino from 19 January. Then the Award Winning Musical Hedwig and the Angry Inch hits the stage in March also at the The Pieter Toerien Theatre and then the same stage will also host the award winning Broadway Musical Avenue Q premiered for the first time in South Africa! This is an absolute must see that is bound to have you enthralled as these Sesame Street Muppets tackle some real adult content from Porn, homosexuality and racism with real comic brilliance that really makes us confront issues of a modern day society..Then Conrad Koch will also have audiences in stitches with his Puppet antics in Puppet Guy at the Pieter Toerien Theatre from 25 April!
In Cape Town fans of the Fugard Theatre’s production of the smash hit West Side Story will be happy it’s back in March after the Cape Town Opera debut of the long awaited South African Story Tsosti the Musical in February based on the Oscar winning movie of the same name.
But the highlight of 2018 must be the premiere of the musical adaptation of The Colour Purple at the Joburg theatre which opens 31st January. You simply can’t afford to miss this one!  Directed by Janice Honeyman and starring an all star South African cast this show is said to be incredible. The New York Times called it a ‘Ravishing Production’ and the London Times said, ‘Never was there such stamping, cheering, hooting, roaring and whistling… It Rock’s the house!’
